Assessment Series

Karley Alleyn, M. Ed – Accessible Assessment

4 part webinar series on Assessment (February 2, March 9, April, May)

Assessment and what that looks like for our students is something that interests me. When I think about assessment and my experiences as a parent when my kids were younger, I felt like the little blurb written on their report cards did not give me a holistic view of their learning. I was an active parent volunteer and had the privilege of being in the classrooms regularly and saw more than just a snapshot of their learning that appeared on report cards. Being a parent of a student with an intellectual disability meant that I also felt like assessment for him was like a child trying to put a square peg in a round hole. It just didn’t fit or make sense. I want to be able to view how I assess my students through various lens to accurately assess their learning for where they are at. I have been diving into assessment education and resources to add to my assessment toolbox. I came across the assessment series webinars and find the series to be informative and helping teachers to develop their assessments so that it is not time consuming and encompasses a big picture of a student’s learning.

One of the things I have been exploring recently is how can we indigenize our assessment practices. One of the ways I can indigenize my own teaching practice is to reflect on how I assess my students in order to meet the curriculum competencies. One of the blogs I came across in my research: Can you Decolonize Assessment?
